Make Your Own Playdough for Rainy Day Fun

With so much rain and a long cold winter on the horizon, I thought I would share how easy it is to make your own playdough.  If you do any baking at all, you probably already have the ingredients in your cupboard.  But best of all, little hands can join in and customize their own color or flavor while you can feel good knowing exactly what's in that big ball of dough they are playing with.

Here's a list of what you will need:

1 cup flour                          1/2 cup salt
2 tbsp cream tartar            2 tbsp veg oil
1 cup water                         food coloring

1 tsp flavor is optional  (I don't use it since I don't want her to be tempted to eat it)

Flour, salt and cream of tartar in the pan with water and
vegetable oil in the measuring cup

Mix it together over medium/low heat and add drops
of food coloring

Stir slowly and adjust color if necessary

After a few minutes, it will start to pull away from the bottom of the pan
and start to form a ball

Turn it out onto a floured surface

After kneading the soft warm dough for a few minutes

You will end up with this:
A perfect, silky soft ball of playdough

Just keep it in an air-tight container or zip lock bag when not in use.  Should last for several months when properly stored.

And for even more fun,
check out your local second-hand shop for cookie cutters, rollers
and pastry cutters which is where we found all of these.

Hours and hours of fun while recycling too!

The wife makes her own playdough. She too is a three year old preschool teacher.

The kids are 3, not the wife.
