Just Because Makes Me Smile!!

My hubby isn't one to buy flowers on my birthday or any other typical occasion so when he came home the other night with a dozen beautiful red roses for me, I was thrilled.

No pressure and no special occasion when society dictates men had better get to the flower shop or risk the doghouse.  This gorgeous bouquet was given to me "just because" which for me is the best reason!

Timing is Everything!!

Feels like I've been raking leaves and doing yard work for weeks but the worst part for me is trying to remove some of the ugly bushes that were planted around our 120-year-old home.  Seems that over the years, more and more gardens were created adding a heck of a lot of seasonal work.  Since our home is part of the Historic Tour in our little town, I take pride in the yard and try to keep it looking beautiful for the tourists.

Getting back to the Fall clean up, each year I try to remove two or three ugly and super high-maintenance bushes (seriously, I can't help but wonder if at one time a groundhog lived here judging from the digging and planting that has been done!).

I removed one of the smaller ugly bushes yesterday and dragged the 50-lb plus root ball to the curb and saved the bigger of the two bushes for today.

As luck would have it, I was just in the process of trying to rip out the last couple of big roots on the 75 plus pound ball of mud and roots when a super-fit (and not bad looking) guy who was jogging by stopped to see if I needed a hand.  Oh yes, talk about timing.  He ripped those last roots out with little effort and slung the entire root base over his shoulder and walked it to the curb for me.

Thanks Good Samaritan!   Talk about timing!

One thing about my love of vintage jewelry is how easily I can come up with an excuse to buy a piece.  Luckily it doesn't happen that often but this weekend, I just couldn't say "No" to a huge, knuckle-busting ring.

The minute I laid eyes on it, it took me right back to the first time I had seen one like it.  It was when I was 16 and working a Summer job at a service station pumping gas.  (This was long before 'self serve' was the norm)

I remembered the sunny day when a long, sleek, shiny red car pulled up to the pumps.  I walked out and there driving the car was the most glamorous woman I had ever seen.  She had long dark hair, big sun glasses, bright red lipstick, and long drop earrings.  She was dressed to kill with perfume stronger than the fumes from the gas I was pumping into her car.

Then when she handed me the $10 bill (yes, you could actually fill the tank of a big gas-guzzling sedan for $10 in those days!), I saw the biggest, flashyest ring I had ever laid eyes on.  I was so mesmerized by her and how glamorous she was, I blurted out how much I admired her ring and asked her what type of stone it held.

With a raspy voice much like Lauren Becall, she laughed and responded with "Ohhhhh my dear, it's smoooooookey topazzzzzzzzzzzzzz."

I've never forgotten her or the impression she made on my 16-year-old self so when I spied this ring over the weekend from my favorite vintage jewelry vendor, I just couldn't resist.

And in case you're wondering, "It's smooooookey topazzzzzzzzz" Lol!!!

Last week, my husband took our five-year-old daughter on their first trip together.  It was a short 2-hour flight to another town for three nights.  This is the first time he's had her away from home on his own overnight since she was born.  I worried a bit and found myself watching for emails from them just to keep up with what they were doing and to know they were okay.  By the time I was getting in the car to pick them up at the airport, I was MORE than ready to have her back in my care.  One more night and I probably would have started to freak out.
