Beach Day!

My favorite childhood Summer memories are of the camping trips we would take to the beach.  We would all pile into the old Volkswagen van my dad had converted into a camper and head to an ocean campground more than three hours away.

The old van had all the conveniences we needed.  The back hatch would open up to reveal a makeshift kitchen on a slab of plywood atop the motor and inside the van was a bench and table that folded down into a bed.  When I think back, I don't know how we managed with five of us crammed into that van but we did.  We would make friends with the other kids and spend the days scouring the beach for seashells and rocks, poke at jellyfish with sticks and build sandcastles.

Now that I'm the mom, I want my daughter to enjoy the beach, the sand and the waves just like I did.  I'm so lucky to have a friend with a cottage on a gorgeous beach here.  Each Summer when she opens up her cottage, we all scramble for our turn to spend the day with her and her children. When Karen prepares lunch or dinner, she makes plenty never certain of how many hungry kids will be landing there with sun kissed-cheeks and smiling faces pulling up a chair at her huge kitchen island.

And that's where I will be spending my day today.  Karen and I will be watching our children play while we lounge around the beach, eat junk food and bitch about our husbands. Ahhhh....paradise!

What are your favorite Summer childhood memories?

Just got back from visiting the beach. Got a little tan, little burn and a lot of sand in the van.

My college girl wants a VW micro bus soooooo bad. She has a bit of hippie in her.

I love those mini busses. It was really strange, but my family never went away for holidays. We lived at the coast - my Dad said we were always on holiday ;(

Oh, your summers sound like heaven.

We always visited our grandparents in Southern Alabama for a week, then just chilled for the remainder of the summer. I, being somewhat of an "indoor girl," usually watched tv, cleaned the house, played Monopoly and Scrabble with myself, and read.

Oh, yeah, those were good times. No sarcasm intended.

sounds lovely, we've only been a few times so far this year and were minutes away, a shame really.
