How Old Do You Think I Am?

"How Old Do You Think I Am?" This was a famous line from a television commercial during the late 1970's for those of you who are too young to remember it.

And that's exactly what popped into my head this week on my 49th birthday. You see, hubby was being a sweetheart and went out to pick up a cake for me on Monday night just in time for my birthday the following day.

I hadn't noticed the cake at first, he slipped out after dinner, told me there were a few groceries he wanted to pick up and took off. So he comes home about an hour later with the groceries and puts them away. I was drawing with our daughter and didn't pay much attention to what he was doing.

Later, I went into the kitchen to get something and noticed this pretty pink and white cake sitting on the counter.

I looked over at my husband who was watching TV and said "This cake is so pretty, but why does it say "39th?"

He looked up at me and I wish you could have seen the look that went across his face. Just this blank stare like a deer caught in headlights and then panic followed by:

"Oh my God! Why was I thinking you were 39? You're 49 this year......right? I don't know what made me tell them to put 39 on the cake! Shit, I just wasn't thinking!!"

I know my husband and this wasn't a joke, he was serious. I couldn't help but laugh knowing I really didn't care one way or the other. 39, 49, or 59 written in butter cream frosting was okay with me, as a matter of fact, if the cake had "Happy Birthday You Old Bat" written on it, I would still enjoy eating it. After all, he did get the date right and it's the thought.... I think......

So I have to ask, has your husband or significant other gotten your age wrong?

Take that as a beautiful compliment! And Happy Birthday.

HA! This is hysterical!! My hubby knows how old I am, but I have to remind him how old HE is all the time. And I forget how old I am by a year sometimes. What can I say? I get confused.

Liz Mays said...

Heck yeah, I voted on your birthday and I'm sure you look every bit of 39 and not 49! I think it's kinda sweet that he forgot!

Samantha said...

At least it didn't read 59 or even 69...lol, that's so funny though, bless him. You must look 39 to him :)

I am actually pretty good with the important dates. I have never forgotten one in 28 yrs. However it turned out I did forget how old I was one year when they broke out the cake I realized I had gained a yr. Hubby picked a lovely cake. Happy Bday to you.

Lee said...

Mine can't remember the date, much less the age.

Love that cake! Sometimes hubby forgets my b-day. Then he is in major trouble. Hope you had a great birthday.

That rocks! Give that man some extra birthday lovin'. I know he's supposed to give you the lovin', but hell if my husband thought I was ten years younger than I am I wouldn't let him out of bed for a week!

Tara said...

Oh that's funny! Hope you had a great bday

Happy Birthday. How cute. It's better than someone asking me if my daughter was my granddaughter. Ooph! It's not even possible. thank you very much.

Beautiful cake. My friend just celebrated her 40th and she was looking at the lovely cake on her stove. Then she jumped back realizing it wasn't her stove, but a new one. It was classic.

My husband never forgets anything - in our house I am the one who does and have in the past completely forgotten our wedding anniversary and on one occasion mistook the date of his birthday (for some reason I thought it was the 28th of July and not the 26th and had no card, present or surprise ready therefore on the 26th). I can't blame Momnesia for any of those happenings either!

Consider it a wonderful compliment that your husband got it wrong and thought it was your 39th birthday. Could you share with the rest of us what your secret is for making him believe you are ten years younger?

What wonderful effort on his part! And at least it was 39 and not 59. My husband has no problem remembering how old I am because I am a few months older and he will never let me forget it...

Maureen@IslandRoar said...

Aw, he thought you were 39? He is seriously a Keeper!
Enjoy!!

Mmmm, cake! I'm still in my twenties so I think my husband just kind of guesses at my age and goes with it. I'm pretty sure he puts all of his energy into just remembering my birthday and our Anniversary dates to start. Gotta love that your hubby thinks of you as a smokin' hot 39 year old :)

Debbiedoos said...

Debbie, I would totally take that as a compliment, as I am sure you did!!~ 10 years younger, and that was what hubby was thinking, it's all good, take and run!!~

sadly, I forget how old I am most days...

My husband doesn't forget how old I am, but I forget how I am. I'm 54 and he's 49 so perhaps his memory is better...lol

Yep, I voted! Happy Birthday to you! I'm with you....a cake is a cake no matter what it says...it still says "celebration" and "yum".

Hope you had the most fantastic birthday!

Kimberly said...

That was cute though...he thought you were 10 years younger.

I wanted to stop by and see you...it has been a while.

Happy Birthday!

No, my husband should not forget since we are only a year apart.

Too funny really! I always lie ab out my age so sometimes I forget but never my hubby I'm two weeks older than him. Nice cake!

In our house I'm the one who is not so good at the remembering. My husband is the kind of guy who will bring me home flowers just because he is thinking of me and he has now enlisted the kids to do the same when they are all out without me ...

Now, having given him this good press ...

He did tell me last weekend that I would have to change my blog title to "Over 50" pretty soon in order to be honest with my blog buddies ...

Your husband did a great job with the cake ...

Hope you had a wonderful birthday !!!

Kitty Moore said...

Not only did he remember and get you a cake, he made you ten years younger! Your husband sounds like a gem. x

Buckeroomama said...

That was really sweet of him to get you a cake... and to put you at 10 years younger, sweeter even!

NYCGAL said...

LOL!! That is great!! Happy Birthday Deb!

My husband (with the help of my mom) surprised me with a 40th birthday party a couple years ago. On my 41st birthday, he got me a card that indicated I was 40! He, like your husband, was serious. I couldn't believe it. I suppose in his eyes I will be FOREVER 40!

That's a husband worth keeping :)

Sweet! Hubby had the right idea...aren't we supposed to be 29 or 39 over and over forever?!

June said...

Now that is one cake I wouldn't mind eating from Ward! 10 years off the mark? What a compliment!!

You caught yourself a very good fish.

mommy_sammyk said...

It's definitely the thought that counts! At least you know he thinks you're beautiful!
=)

Don't kick me for favoring your hubby again..lol..but that's one error I would LOVE him forever for!

My lovely hubs always tacks extra years on when he speaks of my age..just to be an ass of course...he does however have to ask me, quite often, how old HE is!

Happy Birthday Gorgeous!

Linda Medrano said...

Oh heck, 39 - 49 what's the difference! I love it when mistakes are made like that. If he had them put 59 on it, not so much!

Danielle said...

I think it means that he thinks of you as a much younger bat! :) Good sign!

KaLynn ("MiMi") said...

Happy pats on the back for the cake and the right day!! He seems awesome! Cute cake!! I am impressed!!

I NEVER let anyone forget my birthday or my age! So the question does not apply to me!

ethelmaepotter! said...

Aaah, I guess I'm a reluctant member of the take-it-as-a-compliment camp. I mean, he DID remember the date, he DID get the cake, he DID go ten years younger...gotta give him credit for thoughfulness, I guess.

Jen said...

Happy Birthday!!! I'm pretty sure Hubby knows how old I am, it's one less than him :) How awesome that he lost a whole decade for you though!

Happy Birthday...

He had gotten my Birthday wrong and many other things.

Um, you're not trying to tell me you're upset he put "39" instead of "49" on...girl, we have to talk...

Happy Birthday Deb! Hope your day was a great one! I love the 39, I would be all over that...lol!

I hope you are enjoying your birthday week...that is what hubby and I do.

TheFitHousewife said...

MMMMM...did you save a piece for me?!

My hubby hasn't forgotten my age, yet. But he always forgets our kid's ages!

Annie Z said...

I missed your birthday with the insanity of this week! Happy Birthday! It's definitely the thought that counts. Go with the flow of 39 I reckon! lol. It's a beautiful cake and I reckon it might have tasted pretty good too! :)

Tracey said...

Hubband always forgets how old I am (41). Not that I mind much, as he is often asking me how old HE is (32).

You see, in that age difference lies the problem. He can usually remember one age or the other, but can't imagine that the difference can be that much, so he must be wrong.

I look on the bright side. I have a younger man who always remembers my birthday.

Shannon K. said...

I'm with you...the more buttercream frosting the better! Who cares what he says?

Matty said...

You are so right Deb. Trust me when I say from a man's point of view, it really IS the thought that counts. We don't always get it right, but we do deserve an A for effort.

Happy 39th Birthday!

Jen said...

What a sweetie!

Neither of my ex husbands ever remembered my birthday or had any idea how old I was. Ex#2 would realize it was my birthday a week or so later and then blame it on me for not reminding him. Never got a cake, right age or wrong.

Stacy Uncorked said...

At least he got it wrong 10 years younger - that's definitely a compliment. 10 years older? Not so much. ;)

Happy 39th Birthday! ;)

Awww, that's so sweet! Clearly he thinks of you as just being 39. Take it! and Happy Birthday! I'm right behind you, turning 49 myself in a month. And yes, my husband gets my age and birth date wrong all the time. it's become a game...he pretends like he is kidding when he says it's the 17th, but i know he's really fishing around for me to help him remember that no, it's the 18th. forget about him remembering the year. but, not important!

Oh my Deb, you sure do have a billion commentors!!

That is such a cute story! I love that he got it wrong...my hubs knows my age better than I do. Its the mommy brain that gets me and I could never remember how old I am! Luckily, knowing my age makes my hubs feel younger so I think thats the only reason he remembers (hes 11 years older than me).

Elizabeth Channel said...

Well, I'm an older mom too and when I took my newborn (four years ago) to her first doctor's appointment, the nurse asked me of I was the mother. I was incensed! As opposed to the grandmother or nanny?

Funny post!

I once had a bakery put Happy Birthday You're Old! on a cake for a friend and they spelled you're wrong. (your) It was back before Cake Wrecks so I didn't get a picture of it. My dad has gotten me cakes before that say Happy Bday Turkey (bday is near Thanksgiving). I think it's pretty funny.

Maybe he doesn't think of you as being 49.
