Halloween Decor Treat Project!

This is one of my favorite Halloween projects and I can honestly say, I can't remember where I got the idea for it but I can tell you, the kids love it!

The black blob under the sign is a fake feathered crow who happens to
look a lot better in person and in this photo!

It's as easy as taking a regular pumpkin and using a metal skewer or knitting needle to poke lots of holes in the skin.  Then just insert the suckers and thread a few rubber worms around their bases.  I've even carved out some round holes throughout the pumpkin and stuck in little plastic mice facing inward and outward. It takes less than half and hour to make and it's easy to replenish the suckers throughout the night as the little ones help themselves.

I made the sign by staining a piece of heavy paper with cold tea and then drawing an ugly hand and spooky lettering on it before gluing it on top of a regular sign available at our local dollarmart.  Super economical but super cute for the kids too!

The Invisible Problem

The subject of this post is about an invisible problem that most of us face, but don't know it.  And it revolves around one of the most important subjects of our lives: Money.  Yes, the subject that seems to be ever-present, ever growing, and able to arouse nearly any emotional state.

For better or worse, money plays a major role in our lives.  And when we think about money as it relates to our future, it's a subject most of us probably don't think about enough.  Will I have enough for retirement?  Is my 401k/IRA/Savings being managed properly?  Am I at risk of losing money?  So many questions.

Well, here's an interesting tidbit to consider.  When our money is being managed properly it often grows at twice the rate as when it's not.  Think about that.  TWICE.  Over the course of a career, that can mean the difference of hundreds of thousands of dollars (sometimes more), just because someone is making a few good (or bad) decisions about their money.  And here's the punchline:  Most people believe their money is being managed properly, when in reality, it's not.

And why is that the case?  It's the case because most good financial advice comes from Registered Investment Advisors (RIAs), and ironically, RIAs charge a lot of money for their advice - which means most of the good advice goes to the wealthy (the people who already have a lot of money!).  And because most of us are not wealthy, it means we probably aren't receiving high quality advice, which not only seems unfair, but creates a big problem for us.  An invisible problem.  And unfortunately, an invisible problem with potentially serious consequences for our retirement, and for our quality of life.

Well, there's a new group of entrepreneurs who are solving this problem.  Their mission is to democratize financial advice for everyone so that the average person can receive the same high quality advice as a wealthy person.  They've founded a company called Financial Guard, and they've spent the past 3 years building a system that provides people with high quality, personalized financial advice.  And most importantly, their mission is to make this advice affordable.  Instead of paying thousands of dollars for high quality advice, they're offering it for $10 per month.  A new way of doing things indeed.  If you're curious to see how it works you can actually receive free advice for the first 14 days by visiting their website: www.FinancialGuard.com.  So feel free check it out.  It's about time someone started looking out for the rest of us!

Aloha Friday - Halloween Edition

Aloha Fridays are brought to you by Kailani in beautiful Hawaii at An Island Life where Friday is the day to take it easy while anticipating the coming weekend. Today I'm going to link up, take it easy and ask a question:

When I was a kid, there was one house in the neighborhood giving out full-sized cans of pop to us on Halloween night.  The minute we were out the door, we would make a mad dash to their door to make sure they didn't run out before we had a chance to claim our own can of pop.  Such a big treat in the days before pop was as accessible as milk at home.

So this week's question is:

What are you giving out for treats to the kids this year?

We are giving out treat-sized chocolate bars, about 4 per kid.

Firmoo.com Stylish Glasses Review!

Being someone who wears glasses for computer use and reading, I was thrilled when the generous folks at firmoo.com offered to send me a pair of their sensational glasses for review.  With over 300 stylish and super affordable frames to choose from, I was happy to see they offered an on-line Virtual try-on system so I could try the frames before selecting them.  This high-tech option allows buyers to upload their own photos and try on the glasses so they can confidently select the right style for their features.

After checking out several options, I chose these super cool glasses in brown.

I love the retro inspired circle pattern on the arms making these a super stylish option.  Once I provided my prescription and PD (Pupillary Distance which is easy to measure at home), here's the package I received from firmoo.com in record time.

The first thing I noticed was how well made these glasses are and how comfortable they are to wear.  The quality is definitely there and the service provided by firmoo.com is exceptional.  They provided everything I need to keep these fabulous glasses in tip-top shape for years to come.  There is a black leatherette hard case to protect them as well as a drawstring pouch.  And to keep my lenses lint and dirt free, they included a soft cleaning cloth.  But they didn't stop there.  They even included a handy keyring with screwdriver and extra screws so I can do repairs at home if need be.

Easy Halloween Decor To Make Yourself

With Halloween being my all-time favorite holiday, I know I get carried away when it comes to decorating the outside of our old home.  One feature I love is the recessed porch on the front.  It's already embellished with star cutouts that were done back in 1891 when the house was built making it the perfect place to create a spooky entrance for the kids in the neighborhood.

Here's what the kids will see on their left as they step up into the front porch
to ring the doorbell:

But as they turn around to leave, our pretty Mona Lisa picture
turns into a long-lost relative of Gene Simmons complete with vampire
cloak and bats:

And this was so easy and economical to make.  The center hologram picture measures 10" x 12" and was only a few dollars at our local Dollarmart.  The old frame measuring 24" x 34" was only $1 at a yard sale and provides the perfect setting for the photo.  A piece of cheap black bristol board cut to fit the large frame and then our Mona Lisa picture is glued to the center.  Add a few creepy spider webs and she's ready to spook the little ghosts and goblins who dare ring our bell this Halloween.

Check back for more spooky and economical Halloween decorating ideas!

Aloha Friday - Makeover Edition!

Aloha Fridays are brought to you by Kailani in beautiful Hawaii at An Island Life where Friday is the day to take it easy while anticipating the coming weekend. Today I'm going to link up, take it easy and ask a question:

This is a little project I've been working on for the past couple of weeks

This old barn has been an eyesore in the yard since we renovated our historic home back in 2007.  This ugly pink is the color that was on the house when we purchased it but has since been changed to yellow and white.
Here's how the old barn looks now

which leads me to this week's question:

Do you do your own painting or hire someone?  Better yet, do you get your significant other to do it?
